These days pretty much any successful movie gets a sequel – it’s just that some take longer than others to materialize. For anyone old enough to have seen the original in the theater, it may come as a bit of a surprise – or just be downright depressing – to realize it’s been twenty years since we first watched Lloyd and Harry scooter their way across the great plains of Denver in search of Mary Samsonite. Now after all these years, numerous setbacks, and a prequel we’re all just pretending never happened, we finally get our first look at the reunion of our favorite moronic duo.
Jim Carrey (Kick-Ass 2) and Jeff Daniels (Looper) once again star as Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne, two loveable idiots and best friends. The premise for the sequel finds the boys once again hitting the road, this time in search of the daughter Harry never knew he had. The plot however is of course secondary to the fact that Carrey and Daniels are finally reprising the roles that have become iconic and remain among the most popular of each of their careers. Judging from the trailer, it doesn’t appear that anyone was in the mood to try and mess with a winning formula, as it is chock-full of references and callbacks to the original.
The trailer also leaves little doubt as to who directed the movie, as the Farrelly brothers (Dumb and Dumber, There’s Something Abut Mary) signature gross-out comedy looks to be in full effect – witness the closing scene, which unfortunately can’t be unseen. Also appearing alongside Carrey and Daniels will be Kathleen Turner (Serial Mom), Laurie Holden (TV’s The Walking Dead), and because no wacky comedy would be complete without him, Rob Riggle (21 Jump Street, The Hangover). Universal releases the much-anticipated sequel on November 14th. The poster, featuring the triumphant return of the Shaggin’ Wagon, is below.
