Seven years ago, the Justice Department filed the biggest forfeiture complaint in US history, and years later, a documentary will be made on the topic. The Smoking Section announced the upcoming release of Man On The Run from director Cassius Michael Kim.
The forfeiture complaint states that billions were stolen by Malaysia’s 1MDB sovereign wealth fund and spent on the most lavish things one could find in the US—penthouse apartments in New York, high-end mansions in Los Angeles, even yachts and private jets. The scandal even found its way into Hollywood when some money was used to finance The Wolf Of Wall Street.
Efforts have been made to take back the assets, but the man behind the scandal, businessman Jho Low, is still a fugitive. Some consider him the most-wanted “white-collar” criminal on the planet and believe he is in China, under house arrest in Shanghai.
The upcoming documentary on the scandal will feature interviews with FBI agents Charles W. O’Neal and David Smith, who were key players in the case against 1MDB. It will also contain the last filmed interview from Najib Razak, former Prime Minister of Malaysia before he was sent to prison.
The newly released trailer by Hollywood Reporter shows how Low used his stolen funds to become close with many high-tier movie stars, such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Paris Hilton, and Jamie Foxx.
