The 1990s sci-fi horror cult classic The Faculty is set to get a remake, with the original director Robert Rodriguez taking the producer role. Released in 1998, The Faculty follows a group of high schoolers who believe parasitic aliens are controlling their teachers. The film includes an ensemble cast, such as Josh Hartnett, Famke Janssen, Jordana Brewster, Elijah Wood, Salma Hayek, and Usher. Written by Scream writer Kevin Williamson, The Faculty gained a cult following and is considered one of the most popular high school movies of the 90s.
The Faculty remake will develop screenplay written by Drew Hancock. Hancock’s debut film Companion, starring Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid, was just recently released in theaters. Alongside Rodriguez, the production company BoulderLight will produce the film along with Miramax.
The making of this remake could answer the question of whether the era it came out in is part of the reason the movie is so beloved. With Rodriguez returning to the film, it will be interesting to see if he can help capture the essence of the original film again.
Most recently, Rodriguez directed the Ben Affleck mystery action thriller Hypnotic and the fifth installment to the Spy Kids Franchise, Spy Kids: Armageddon.
