16 Films Vying for Best Animated Feature Oscar

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has unveiled the 16 films eligible to compete for the Best Animated Feature Academy Award for 2015. As usual, there’s grand assortment of films represented on the list- from huge mainstream blockbusters (Inside OutMinions) to small art films (Moomins on the RiveriaWhen Marnie Was There). Academy rules dictate that in order for the category to be activated, at least eight animated features must have a Los Angeles theatrical release at some point in the year. Check.

Additionally, the category may have a maximum of five nominees (for which there have been for the last four years in Oscar history) if at least sixteen animated features opened theatrically in the span of a year. That may a tad harder to achieve as a few on the list haven’t yet opened (The Good Dinosaur and Charlie Kaufman’s adult-driven Anomalisa are the most high profile). Suffice it to say, number of eventual nominees put aside, it may be difficult for any film to make huge claim for the category with the juggernaut Inside Out far and ahead the seeming frontrunner. The Pixar film (Pixar films have won the Animated Feature Oscar a record seven times since the category was introduced in 2001) boasts tremendous critical support and is the top-selling animated feature of 2015 (so far).

Then again, surprises happen every once in a while. Last year, for instance, Disney’s Big Hero 6 took home the Oscar in what was considered a major spoiler. The nominations for 88th Academy Awards will be unveiled on January 14th. The ceremony itself will take place on February 28th.
