Those excited for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming Dunkirk, based on a historic World War II, have another reason to look forward to the movie: it will be released in 70MM across 125 theaters nationwide. The film, which was written and directed by Christopher Nolan, is actually setting record here: Dunkirk is receiving the largest 70MM opening since 1992 (the last film to receive such a large release utilizing the format was Ron Howard’s Far and Away, which starred Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman.)
While 70MM film allows a better resolution than the standard 65MM, it comes with a distinctive cost to operation and feasibility. It’s rare for theaters to have the equipment necessary to roll out the film in that format, and it’s even rarer that the projectors continue to function correct and allow the movies to play without any complications. Understandably, this has led to theaters choosing instead to rely on what is more likely to work. The last major 70MM release was Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight (2015).
The film also has another draw, besides its format: a fantastic cast. Characters will be played by actors ranging from returning fixtures to Nolan films, such as former Batman villain actors Cillian Murphy and Tom Hardy, to Kenneth Branagh, and to surprisingly even One Direction member Harry Styles.
Eager audiences for the film won’t have to wait too much longer until it reaches theaters. Dunkirk will begin showings this month on July 21st.
