Per Variety, a feature film centering around the Swissair 111 flight crash has begun shooting. Directed by Mauro Mueller, a recipient of a Student Academy Award in 2013 for his short film A World for Raúl, 111 follows the tragedy and repercussions of the aforementioned Swissair 111 flight crash, an accident that took place off the coast of Nova Scotia in September of 1998.

111 is being produced by Swiss C-Films AG and Canadian Auguste Content, with an international cast including Kris Holden-Ried, Natalie Brown, Eric Keenleyside, Ursina Lardi, Anatole Taubman, Djebril Zonga and Fathia Youssouf. Filming began on September 18th in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and will move to Switzerland until filming ends in October. Elevation Pictures is set to handle the Canadian release, with Ascot Elite Entertainment releasing the film in Switzerland. Global Screen will make the international release, the distribution arm of TELEPOOL.

Described by C-Films AG co-owner Anne Walser as “locally rooted and yet global,” 111 aims to not only trace the event of the tragedy but also the impact that the crash had on nations across the world.  Refraining from the action associated with films surrounding real-life tragedies, Director Mauro Mueller stated, “We are not interested in developing a Boulvardesque disaster movie or retelling the tragedy one-to-one.” Further ushering this sentiment, Canadian producer Bernier claimed “We hope this film will remind us of the power of coming together across borders and honor the lives of those we lost.”
