#1 Box Office Movie ‘Bob Marley: One Love’ Grosses $28 Million Over President’s Day Weekend

Bob Marley: One Love topped at the box office this Valentine’s Day weekend. The movie based on the life of reggae singer, Bob Marley, grossed $50 million in the domestic box office overtaking Sony’s Madame Web. 

Bob Marley: One Love got $14 million on it’s opening day on Valentine’s Day, and added another $34.1 million over the four-day Presidents Day weekend. This weekend, the film grossed $28 million. The film grossed double the projected business surrounding the release, and is on par with other musical biopics, such as, Elvis and Rocketman. 

Bob Marley’s son, Ziggy Marley said in a statement, “My family and I are honored with the amazing response to Bob Marley: One Love. Like my father’s music, this movie is meant for the people and his message of peace, love, and unity is clearly connecting with audiences around the world. We thank the people for embracing this film and in so doing helping to highlight the message of one love.”

One Love did not just do well domestically, internationally, the film earned $29 million, and opened as number 1 in 13 markets worldwide. In Jamaica, the film made history as the biggest film opening of all time for the country. In the U.S., the film received diverse audiences with Black audiences making up 40% of ticket sales with Latinos making up 25%, Caucasians making up 23%, Asian 5%, and Native American/Other making up 7%.

Madame Web has disappointed at box office and received a plethora of poor reviews from critics. On release day, the movie got $26.2 million, which an all time low for Sony’s superhero movies. Over the weekend Madame Web did not recover from its upsetting start, and only raked in another $15 million in ticket sales.

Madame Web did not fair well overseas either. On opening day, the film received $25.7 million in 61 global markets, and received $51.9 million over the full weekend. This is big upset for Sony, as the film was reported to have cost $80n million in production, but sources have said that the real number was closer to $115 million.
