Weekly Trailer Roundup – 9/1/14 thru 9/7/14

Welcome to the Weekly Trailer Roundup, where we count down the top five trailers released in the past week, “top” being defined any way we want to at the moment…exciting, ridiculous, best, worst…

These are the trailers that, for one reason or another, you should be paying attention to.

This week, we will be focusing on foreign films. Remember those? You watched a lot of them in college, but now you just wait for the American remakes, because no matter how hard you try you just can’t get into a movie when you have to read subtitles – it just takes you out of the experience, and even though you’d never admit this to your Britophile friends, you just can’t understand UK accents – even the posh ones. You know, foreign films.

This week’s picks have all the martial arts, philosophy, and odd sex-stuff you expect from unAmerican productions.

 #5 – Iceman

An ancient warrior with mystic powers transported to modern times to battle evil. Yes, this is the Chinese version of Thor. Thank you for noticing.

#4 – A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence

Maybe it’s the bound monkey with its brain hooked up to a machine, the male dancer being groped, the abandoned shrimp sandwich and draught beer, or the long title, but something about this feels so inherently European (Swedish, specifically).

#3 – Mirage

Did you even know Westerns were allowed to be Hungarian? Well, it’s got the French ice cream vendor from Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai kicking all kinds of ass, so who cares?

#2 – Felony

Some flattering quotes from critics sprinkled throughout can’t quite compare to a pretty damn cool quote from Tom Wilkinson (in an Australian accent) at the end of this trailer.

#1 – Who Am I – No System Is Safe

Take the early previews for The Fifth Estate (remember when that actually looked good?); mix in the Project Mayhem parts of Fight Club, flavor with The Matrix, V for Vendetta, and The Social Network; top it all off with Germany, and you’ve got the trailer for Who Am I – No System Is Safe.
