Welcome to the Weekly Trailer Roundup, where we count down the top five trailers released in the past week, “top” being defined any way we want to at the moment…exciting, ridiculous, best, worst…
These are the trailers that, for one reason or another, you should be paying attention to.
The summer moviegoing season is nearly upon us, and that really only means one thing – sequels! As American as apple pie, the sequel has become a staple of the pop culture landscape. This week we look at trailers, teasers, and a TV spot, for five new chapters in five different franchises. Some of them are hotly-anticipated iterations of huge tentpoles, and others are, well, The Transporter Refueled.
#5 – Avengers: Age of Ultron (TV Spot #2)
You have to hand it to Marvel, their marketing materials are nearly as exciting and meticulously engineered as the movies themselves. They keep feeding fans tiny morsels of information, without giving away the whole meal. In this spot we get ever-so-slightly longer looks at new characters Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), the latter of whom apparently has a Russian accent?
#4 – Insidious: Chapter 3
Some sequels are chronological continuations of the story from the first movie, while others, like the strangely titled Insidious: Chapter 3, go back in time to tell the story of what happened before the first movie. Interestingly, this film marks the directorial debut of series writer – and actor who played Specs in both previous movies – Leigh Whannell. Also interesting is that series regular – and now star – Lin Shaye, who is 71 years old, will actually be playing a younger version of her character.
#3 – The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2
And some sequels have such a big brand name and such a large built-in audience, that their initial teaser need not show anything beyond the logos from the previous entries.
#2 – The Transporter Refueled
To be fair, I suppose this is technically a reboot and not a proper sequel. This may go down in cinematic history as the movie that finally answered the question on everyone’s mind: how lame and cynical does an action movie have to be before Jason Statham turns it down?
#1 – Mission Impossible 5: Rogue Nation
This reunion of director Christopher McQuarrie and star Tom Cruise – they previously worked together on 2012’s Jack Reacher – looks less like a Mission: Impossible movie and more like a slightly more high-brow Fast and Furious movie.
