Weekly Trailer Roundup – 10/13/14 Thru 10/19/14

Welcome to the Weekly Trailer Roundup, where we count down the top five trailers released in the past week, “top” being defined any way we want to at the moment…exciting, ridiculous, best, worst…

These are the trailers that, for one reason or another, you should be paying attention to.

There are many ways a trailer can try to sell an audience on a film. It can use clever editing, picking out the right lines of dialogue and pieces of action to show (and the right ones to hide), blending music, images, and sounds, together until the trailer becomes a work of art unto itself. And, if all else fails the trailer can just plaster quotes from people who already saw the film across the screen. So, today we’re honoring trailers that let the critics tell you to see their films (so they don’t have to).

#5 – Leviathan

“The finest film in the Cannes competition. The level of craftsmanship on display is unrivaled.”

Great, now you’ve made all the other Cannes films feel insecure.

#4 – Foxcatcher

“Steve Carell gives a transformative, career defining performance.” “Channing Tatum delivers a revelatory and intense turn.” “Mark Ruffalo is mind-blowingly good.”

Sure, the film looks alright, but what’s its selling point. Is it the script? The camerawork? The lighting?

#3 – Whiplash

“Riveting, blistering… brilliant.”

Heh, “blistering.” Get it? Because it’s about a drummer, and drumming gives you… never mind.

#2 – Set Fire to the Stars

“Dynamic and truly electric performances from Elijah Wood and Celyn Jones.”

Oh, so there’ good acting in it. Pity none of the other films on the list have that selling point.

#1 – Why Don’t You Play in Hell?

“Mankind’s greatest achievement.”

This one wins.
