New year, news films! With 2018’s cinematic offerings coming to a definite close, it’s only natural that we’re looking to what’s next in film. This year in 2019, audiences will be treated to a lot of incredible sequels, anticipated superhero releases, indie horror films, exciting new animation, and so much more. Take a look at some of the films that have already caught our attention.
January – GLASS
Bringing together two of his most well received films for an unexpected horror shared world sequel, M. Night Shyamalan has grabbed the world’s attention with Glass. His hero/villain combo in Unbreakable, portrayed by Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson, as well as his multiple personality misunderstood villain in Split (James McAvoy) will all meet when Willis’ David Dunn hunts down The Beast, only to find out his connection to Dunn’s former antagonist, Glass.
Glass hits theaters on January 17.
February – THE LEGO MOVIE 2: THE SECOND PART
The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part reunites the heroes of Bricksburg in an all new action-packed adventure to save their beloved city. It’s been five years since everything was awesome and the citizens are now facing a huge new threat: LEGO DUPLO invaders from outer space, wrecking everything faster than it can be rebuilt. The battle to defeat the invaders and restore harmony to the LEGO universe will take Emmet (Chris Pratt), Lucy (Elizabeth Banks), Batman (Will Arnett) and their friends to faraway, unexplored worlds, including a strange galaxy where everything is a musical. It will test their courage, creativity and Master Building skills, and reveal just how special they really are.
Lego Movie 2 hits theaters on February 8.
March – CAPTAIN MARVEL
Marvel’s first ever solo female superhero film will finally make it debut in March. It will surely be a gear-up to whatever Avengers: Endgame has in store for Marvel fans in April, and will be a fun throwback for fans and kids of the 1990s. Not all that much is known about the plot aside from one of the villains being the Skrulls, who will be battling against another alien race and threatening Earth in the meantime. It’s up to Captain Marvel, a.k.a. Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) to save the universe.
Captain Marvel hits theaters on March 8.
April – AVENGERS: ENDGAME
Endgame will pick back up right where Infinity War left off – (SPOILER ALERT) with a great deal of the Avengers being dead at the hands of Thanos after he wiped away half of all life in the universe. It is up to the remaining Avengers to defeat him, possibly turn back the clock, and figure out a way to save their fellow superheroes as well as the rest of the living universe (maybe Captain Marvel has something to do with that?!).
Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26.
May – JOHN WICK 3: PARABELLUM
Our favorite animal-loving killing machine is back for a third film. While very little is known about the plot of the third film, we do know that Keanu Reeves will be returning and will be joined by newcomer Halle Berry. John Wick will be on the run in the third film, following Chapter 2‘s assassination and will be fighting to get out of New York City.
John Wick 3: Parabellum hits theaters on May 17.
June – TOY STORY 4
Andy’s toys are all back once again in Pixar’s most beloved animation franchise. New to the cast is Keanu Reeves, Patricia Arquette, and Get Out filmmaker Jordan Peele. Woody, Buzz and the gang are brought face-to-face with a new toy named Forky and together they all embark on a road trip that opens up the world to them even more.
Toy Story 4 hits theaters on June 24.
July – ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD
Quentin Tarantino takes on the 1960s in Hollywood, brushing up topics ranging from the silver screen, Sharon Tate, and Charles Manson. The plot follows a movie star and his stunt double as the two try to make a name for themselves during the Helter Skelter reign of terror in 1960s Hollywood. Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie and more star.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood hits theaters on August 9.
August – MIDSOMMAR
Very little has been released or revealed about Ari Aster’s follow-up to the critically acclaimed horror indie, Hereditary. The film will star Will Poulter, Jack Reynor and Florence Pugh and will follow a couple traveling together on a summer trip to Sweden for a mid-summer festival when things suddenly go awry. What seems like an idyllic trip turns into a horrific and violent struggle at the hands of the region’s pagan cult.
Midsommar hits theaters on August 9.
September – IT: CHAPTER TWO
With the remake of It being such a well-received success at the guidance of director Andy Muschietti, fans were clamoring for a sequel. In the follow-up, 27 years after the latest installment, “The Losers Club” is all grown up and moved away, however, until a sinister phone call brings them all back. James McAvoy, Jessica Chastain, Bill Hader, and Bill Skarsgard all star.
It: Chapter Two hits theaters on September 6.
October – JOKER
In recent memory, we have had an Academy Award winning Joker (played by Heath Ledger), and a less-than-well-received version from Jared Leto. It seems as though Hollywood, and audiences, are not done with the enigmatic villain, though. Todd Phillips is bringing the Joker back for an origin story in which we’ll see him begin as a failed comedian before he turns into the wise-cracking terror that comic book fans know. Joaquin Phoenix stars with Robert De Niro and Zazie Beetz.
Joker hits theaters on October 4.
November – FROZEN 2
Little is known about the Disney Princess sequel aside from that we’ll be seeing sisters Elsa (Idina Menzel) and Anna (Kristen Bell) back in singing form once again. Also returning are Jonathan Groff as the voice of Kristoff and Josh Gad as Olaf. Evan Rachel Wood and Sterling K. Brown joined the film back in July, 2018, but their roles have not yet been disclosed. Frozen became such a worldwide phenomenon and has likely played an umpteen amount of times across family living rooms all around the world. It’s no wonder we’ll be getting a sequel.
Frozen 2 hits theaters on November 22.
December – STAR WARS: EPISODE IX
Not only is the struggle between the Resistance and the First Order continuing, but so is J.J. Abrams’ relationship with the franchise, returning to the director’s chair after helming the reboot of the series, The Force Awakens. Audiences will also get one final send off of their beloved Princess Leia Organa, played by the late Carrie Fisher. Also returning are Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, and many more.
The as-of-yet unnamed Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters on December 20.
