Universal’s upcoming film adaptation of the Broadway musical, Dear Evan Hansen has set a release date for September 24. The film will star Ben Platt, who is reprising his Tony-winning role, alongside Amandla Stenberg, Amy Adams and Julianne Moore, who will play Evan’s mother.
Dear Evan Hansen tells the story of a high school senior with social anxiety disorder who undergoes a journey of self-discovery and acceptance following the suicide of a fellow classmate. Booksmart star Kaitlyn Dever will co-star in the film, as well as Colton Ryan, Danny Pino and Nik Dodani.
Wonder and The Perks of Being a Wallflower director Steve Chbosky will direct Dear Evan Hansen with a screenplay from Steven Levenson, the writer of the book that the Broadway Musical was based on. Chbosky is also currently working on a live-action feature about Prince Charming titled, Prince Charming.
Platt played a part in the first two Pitch Perfect films as Benji, and he’s made appearances in television shows like The Simpsons and Will & Grace. He’s also set to star in an upcoming musical comedy film from Boyhood director Richard Linklater, Merrily We Roll Along, and Camp X-Ray director Peter Settler’s upcoming drama Broken Diamonds.
