After not having any new Marvel Cinematic Universe related material in 2020 due to the pandemic, many anticipating that 2021 will be the big comeback year for the MCU. Not only with their current slate of Disney Plus shows with Wandavision and The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, but also with their upcoming movies that were delayed last year including The Eternals. Recent news has surface regarding the film’s production as, director of the film, Chloe Zhao announced that she also penning the script for The Eternals.
The director made the announcement during a recent interview on Screen Rant discussing the film. The film previously had Ryan and Kaz Firpo attached as screenwriters for the Marvel project. Zhao made it publicly official that she was also involved with writing the screenplay during the interview in what she described as her, “I Am Iron Man” moment. “I am the writer on Eternals, the credits just aren’t updated yet, you know, so I still don’t know what it would be like if I don’t write the film, that I’m not at least a huge part of the writing process”, Zhao exclaimed.
It’s still unclear how recent her screenwriting contributions are part of the film, as it’s unknown if she was put on as screenwriter before or after the Firpo brothers finished their initial script. Though it is certainly possible that the screenwriting credit will help give the film more of Zhao’s directorial style. She stated that in regards to the production of the film, “They knew from the moment I pitched the film that I really wanted the scope and scale at the same time as the intimacy, they knew I wanted both. They have been so incredible holding my hand through the entire process allowing me to go as far as possible and as small as possible, and how that fit into the MCU”. Hopefully, the final product will showcase more of the creative freedom directors are able to do for big scale Marvel blockbusters in the vein of The Eternals, and more audiences will be aware of Zhao’s talents.
The Eternals is set for release on November 5th 2021
