Many people will recognize the title Animorphs either from reading the book series or watching the TV show or maybe they just remember seeing one of the many bizarre book covers at their school’s Scholastic book fairs. The Animorphs book franchise was created by the wife and husband team of authors, Katherine Applegate and Michael Grant. The series contains of over 50 different books and tells the story of five kids who gain the power to turn into animals from an alien. These five kids are joined by a friendly alien and together they use their powers to combat an evil alien invasion.
As mentioned earlier the books received a television adaptation that aired on Nickelodeon in the 1990’s, and in the 2010’s it was announced that Universal Pictures was planning on making a movie based on the books. Unfortunately Screen Rant reported that the authors Applegate and Grant have left the Animorphs movie. Grant revealed that he and Applegate left the project on Twitter. While he did not go into great detail about why they choose to leave the project, he mentioned that their decision was based on creative differences, and he also posted a link to the blog website of Rick Riordan, author of Percy Jackson & the Olympians. In the linked blog post Riordan discusses his own experience working with the movie industry. It is probably safe to speculate that Applegate and Grant were experiencing similar issues that Riordan dealt with when is books were being adapted.
An Animorphs movie could still happen even without Applegate and Grant, but fans of the series are worried that the movie will not do the series justice.
