A trailer for Nine Days, the breakout directorial debut from Edson Oda, has finally released. The film was one of biggest hits at this year’s Sundance Film Festival in January.
The film is being called an “existential fantasy,” and stars Joker’s Zazie Beetz, Us actor Winston Duke, Doctor Strange star Benedict Wong, and Pennywise actor from the It films, Bill Skarsgard.
Nine Days follows unborn souls who undergo tests to determine if they are suitable for a new life on earth. The man in charge of these tests, played by Duke, faces the challenge of a candidate unlike the others, who’s played by Beetz. The drama will be executive produced by Her director Spike Jonze.
Japanese-Brazilian director Oda has a background in short films and music videos prior to his feature-length debut, which he also wrote. The film won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award in the Dramatic section at Sundance.
Nine Days currently has an 86% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes with 21 critic scores. Critics say that the film may get viewers to “reconsider [their] entire world view.” Others have said that the film can’t shake the impression of “a brilliant concept that never takes flight.”
The Sony Pictures Classics film is set to be released sometime in early 2021.
