Reese Witherspoon will reprise her iconic role as Elle Woods for a third installment in the Legally Blonde franchise, with Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor writing the script.
Witherspoon announced the reprise back in June 2018 via an Instagram post with the caption, “It’s true…#LegallyBlonde3.” She recently published a second Instagram post announcing Kaling and Goor’s involvement in the project.
In addition to starring in the film, Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine banner will produce Legally Blonde 3 along with Platt Productions, who produced the two other entries in the franchise. Kaling and Goor both have extensive comedic resumes, with Kaling being a former writer on The Office and Goor previously writing for Brooklyn 99. Additionally, this is the second project Kaling and Goor are parenting on, having first worked together on an upcoming wedding comedy starring Kaling and Priyanka Chopra.
When the third Legally Blonde installment was initially announced, Kirsten Smith and Karen McCullah were tasked with co-writing the script. Due to unknown circumstances, Kaling and Goor took over and are entirely re-writing the script and building the story back from the ground up, as opposed to building off of Smith and McCullah’s work.
