Phil Lord and Chris Miller have easily become the most recognizable creators from Sony Pictures Animation, from their directorial debut in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs to their work on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Now Entertainment Weekly have provided a first look at Lord and Miller’s newest upcoming project with Gravity Falls writer Mike Rianda, known as Connected. The first look provided a few images from the upcoming animated film along with some plot and casting details as the film is set to come out later this fall.
Formally known as The Mitchells vs. The Machines, Connected is an animated comedy that centers on a family known as the Mitchells. The daughter Katie, voiced by Abbi Jacobson of Broad City, is an aspiring filmmaker heading off to college. As one last hurrah with the family, Katie’s father Rick (voiced by Danny Mcbride), decides to go on a road trip to Katie’s college. However, things take a rather bizarre turn as their road trip is interrupted by a ton of technical issues. Not just a simple car breaking down or phone breaking issue though, but rather something as big as a robot apocalypse.
Mike Rianda described the film as a combination of two of his favorite things, his crazy family and killer robots. In fact, Connected is very family focused, as Chris Miller described it best by stating, “The big whiz-bang of the tech uprising [and] robot apocalypse makes for a lot of exciting action and comedy, but at the end of the day, the heart of this thing is this family.” It seems like another fun animated family film for Sony Pictures Animation, and with such huge talents behind the feature, Connected seems like another animated film to look out for this year.
Connected is set for release September 18th 2020.
