Labeled to have disturbing behavior and strong violence, Todd Philips’ Joker has officially been rated R. When the film was announced, many were skeptical due to the track record of Warner Bros DC films. It was in the hands of Philips to pave his own direction for the film, with news coming out that it would be separate from the DCEU.
Soon after, many were discussing who would fill the shoes for Batman’s arch nemesis, eventually casting Joaquin Phoenix for the role. Philips already has stated that the film will be completely original, with no comic book adaptation drawing more tension within the comic book community for the beloved character. Previous films such as Logan and Deadpool, which were also had the same rating, gave hope that there would be no restraints for the notorious clown on the big screen.
Its been made clear that this film is looking to march in its own pace, with the first trailer being released the gritty tone, and dark texture of the film gave fans hope that this movie could earn comic adaptations credibility amongst the critics. Based from what we’ve seen so far, it seems that Philips and Phoenix are looking to push the bill on how far they can take this film.
With a world debut scheduled for the 2019 Venice Film Festival, whispers are already floating around about Oscars potential. Joker will be released on October 4, 2019.
