Moviegoers traditionally see animated short films beforef Disney and Pixar films, but other animation studios seem to be taking the opportunity to showcase some creativity right before their feature presentation. Sony’s newest animated feature Angry Birds 2 is one such example, though the short it’s receiving seems a bit unexpected for a property like Angry Birds. The short, according to EW, is titled Hair Love and comes from BlackKklansman producer, Matthew A. Cherry. It tells the story about a father/daughter relationship where the dad must accomplish “the most daunting task of doing his daughter’s hair.”
Hair Love started out as kickstarter campaign from Cherry back in 2017, receiving $280,000 through donations with an initial goal of $75,000 for funding. Cherry expressed excitement about his feature coming so far from its initial kickstarter campaign, stating “I couldn’t be more excited for Hair Love to be playing with The Angry Birds Movie 2 in front of a wide audience and for the world to see our touching story about a black father trying to figure out how to do his daughter’s hair for the very first time.”
The short is directed by Wall-E animator Everett Downing Jr. and Proud Family creator Bruce W. Smith, with Spider-Verse‘s Peter Ramsey and Toy Story 4‘s Frank Abney on board as producers. It also features some big names supplying the voice roles, including Jordan Peele, Gabrielle Union and Issa Rae to name a few. The animation was done at Six Point Harness studio based in Los Angeles and will be, to date, the only short to precede a theatrical animated film in 2019. Given the passion behind this project, Hair Love could definitely receive a nomination for Best Animated Short at the 2020s Oscars.
Angry Birds 2 is set for release on August 14th 2019.
