Warner Bro’s new project about the famous doll will be co-written by Lady Bird director Greta Gerwig and her partner Noah Baumbach. Margot Robbie will star as Barbie in the upcoming film and will also produce. Although no director has been chosen yet, it is rumored that Gerwig may take on the project.
Warner Bros. reached a deal with Mattel Films in January about the distribution rights and this will be the first project that Mattel Films has created since it was established in September 2018.
Gerwig spent part of the last year directing the upcoming Little Women remake of the popular novel by Louisa May Alcott starring Saoirse Ronan, Timothée Chalamet, Meryl Streep, and Emma Watson, among others. Little Women will be released on December 25, 2019, by Sony Pictures.
Baumbach is known for writing The Life Aquatic, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and Frances Ha. He also has an untitled Netflix film coming out in the fall that stars Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson.
Robbie’s upcoming projects include her role as Sharon Tate in Quentin Tarantino’s ninth feature film entitled Once Upon a Time in Hollywood which will be released in theaters on July 26, 2019. Another project that will be released on February 7, 2020, is Birds of Prey where Robbie will reprise her role as the popular DC Comics character Harley Quinn.
