We got our first glimpse of Disney‘s live-action Mulan film’s teaser trailer coming out early next year during the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup halftime commercial.
The trailer shows much of Mulan’s family urging her to bring them honor, much like in Disney’s animated version and we can see Mulan dressing up in the geisha makeup and clothing. Though the new film doesn’t seem to be a musical like its predecessor, hints of the score from the first film can be heard in the trailer.
Check the teaser out below:
There has been some speculation that Mulan’s small dragon friend named Mushu has been changed to be a phoenix, but others think that the idea of having Mushu in the live-action is scrapped altogether. Unfortunately, the trailer doesn’t show if that character is still in the film or not.
Some of the original Disney version’s characters have been changed as well. The new live-action film stars Liu Yifei as Mulan, Donnie Yen as Commander Tung, a new character who plays Mulan’s mentor, Yoson An as Cheng Honghui who replaces the character Li Shang as Mulan’s love interest, Gong Li as Xianniang, an evil witch and ally to Jason Scott Lee’s character, Böri Khan, a Hun warrior leader who replaces the character Shan Yu.
The film was directed by Niki Caro and the screenplay was written by Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Elizabeth Martin, and Lauren Hynek.
The film is set to be released in the United States on March 27, 2020.
