Despite being the highest grossing movie of all time not many people do not remember James Cameron’s Avatar. The movie may have been a technical marvel, but it had very little impact on popular culture. In fact many people still think of the Nickelodeon show, Avatar: the Last Airbender, when they hear the word Avatar. Even after Pandora, the theme park based on the movie, opened up in Disney World’s Animal Kingdom a quick search on the internet will uncover several videos and articles discussing how forgettable the movie is.
However Hollywood is still going forward with its plans for Avatar sequels. Several actors and actresses have already been cast in roles for the upcoming movies. The most recent addition is Michelle Yeoh, who according to the Hollywood Reporter, will be playing a character named Dr. Karina Mogue. Yeoh is known for her performances as the sword wielding warrior, Yu Shu Lien, in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and as the stoic mother Eleanor Sung-Young in Crazy Rich Asians. The actress is also set to have leading role in the upcoming Star Trek spin-off series.
Other actors and actress that will be joining Michelle Yeoh in the Avatar sequels include Cliff Curtis, Kate Winslet, and returning cast members Giovanni Ribisi, Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Stephen Lang. The first installment of the sequels is slated to hit theaters in December 2020.
