Over the last few years, Netflix has proven itself as a force to be reckoned with in the realm of original streaming films. With films like Bright starring Will Smith and Extinction starring Ant-Man and the Wasp’s Michael Pena attaining mass audience appeal, Netflix’s future looks promising. Netflix adds to their list of original films this November when they launch Outlaw King starring Star Trek leading man Chris Pine.
Outlaw King follows the true story of the legendary King of Scots, Robert the Bruce. Pine portrays the fallen king who captures his land back from the King of England one castle at a time. Bruce is known to be one of the fiercest warriors of the 14th century, leading Scotland during the War of Scottish Independence against England. Fans of Games of Thrones will recognize Stephen Dillane, who plays Stannis Baratheon on the acclaimed show. In Outlaw King he portrays Edward I of England, the king who declares Bruce an outlaw in order to lay claim to the Scottish crown.
In the trailer, it appears that desire for revenge may be one of the strongest weapons Bruce uses to conquer his enemies. While it’s unclear how the people who die are related to Bruce, it is clear that these individuals hold a special place in his heart, and serve as a match that lights the fire of his attacks. Additionally, the story shares details on his love life, highlighting the wedding between Bruce and his wife, Elizabeth de Burgh (Florence Pugh), who vehemently supports her husband in his endeavors. As with any period piece about war, audiences can expect elaborate battle scenes that exhibit triumph and loss. The narrative contains plenty of drama as it chronicles the life of the king who united Scotland to free the land from the constricting grasp of England.
The film debuts at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, and Outlaw King streams on Netflix beginning on November 9. Check out the new trailer below.
