Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods) has been tapped by Fox to write and direct their X-Force film, according to Deadline. Another spinoff from their X-Men franchise, this film will tell the story of Deadpool and Cable as they assemble a mutant Black Ops team who are far more rough-and-tumble than their X-Mansion counterparts.
Simon Kinberg, Ryan Reynolds, and Lauren Shuler Donner are producing. Reynolds will also be reprising his role as Deadpool for the film, as will Josh Brolin in the role of Cable, after he debuts the character in Deadpool 2.
Competing with the branching off Marvel and DC tentpoles, Fox is milking their X-Men property for all its worth. In the next two years, audiences will see Deadpool 2, New Mutants, and X-Men: Dark Phoenix also hit the big screen for the growing franchise.
Goddard, primarily serving the industry as a writer and producer (Daredevil, The Defenders, The Good Place) until now, will have his third directed feature film under his belt with X-Force, the first being Cabin in the Woods. He is currently working on Bad Times at the El Royale, which is starring Chris Hemsworth and Jeff Bridges, and is expected to dive into X-Force immediately after.
