Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot was in attendance this weekend at San Diego Comic-Con in support of the upcoming Warner Bros. superhero team-up Justice League. Also announced, however, was the sequel to her stand alone film, which was also this year’s summer box office smash.
A sequel to Wonder Woman has been in the pipeline for some time now, literally after the film’s first weekend at the theaters. Since its debut back in June, the film has grossed over $385 million domestically and $770 million globally, putting it on track to beat Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 as the highest grossing summer movie. It has already broken one major record — the highest grossing film directed by a woman, beating out Sam Taylor-Johnson’s Fifty Shades of Grey. The numbers have gradually and exponentially risen throughout the weeks mainly through word-of-mouth praise and fanfare for the film.
Director Patty Jenkins is one of the reasons that whispers of a Wonder Woman sequel have been so consistent in the past two months. She has been pitching various sequel ideas to Warner Bros. in the past weeks, and although she has not officially signed her name on the dotted line to return as director, the deal is nearly imminent. The one entity that is sure to come back for the sequel, however, is Gal Gadot herself as the shield and sword wielding Amazonian princess.
This is exciting news indeed, especially since Wonder Woman has been the greatest film so far to come out of the DC movie universe. Also announced at the panel was a stand alone Batgirl film and a sequel to Suicide Squad.
