Multi-hyphenate talent Carrie Brownstein (Portlandia) appears set to make her feature directorial debut with the comedy Fairy Godmother, currently on MGM’s slate. A revisionist fairy tale of a sort, Fairy Godmother looks to put a modern spin on familiar romantic fairy tale tropes. The script was penned by Chiara Atik, a playwright and blogger. The spec script set in motion a bidding war among many interested parties before MGM won out the rights in the end. Deadline was the first to report Brownstein’s potential involvement. 

The project follows an in-demand Faye, a gifted fairy godmother, who is commissioned to help the gorgeous Kenzie in an effort to snatch the most coveted prince around. The dynamic gets complicated when the prince shows his true affections lie with Faye. Helen Estabrook (Whiplash) will produce the title.

For Brownstein, the comedy would mark another accomplishment on a busy résumé. She is a six-time Emmy nominee for the cult IFC comedy series Portlandia, a series she co-created with Fred Armisen – she co-star in the sketch series as well as has served as a writer and director throughout. As an actress, she notably has a recurring role on the acclaimed Amazon series Transparent and played a small part in Todd Haynes’ critically beloved 2015 period romance Carol. As a director, she has helmed previous episode of the Hulu series Casual, as well as the short film The Realest Real (which starred Orange is the New Black‘s Natasha Lyonne and Oscar winner Mahershala Ali). She’s also an admired author and musician.

No casting announcements or production timelines have yet to be established on Fairy Godmother. We shall stay tuned.
