EARLIER: Acclaimed filmmaker Todd Haynes will premiere his latest feature film Wonderstruck at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival (which opens in one week), but today comes our first look at the film in the form of three splendid stills. The film re-teams Haynes with frequent muse Julianne Moore – who headlined both Safe and Far From Heaven (earning an Oscar nomination for the latter) and co-starred in his revisionist Bob Dylan-bio I’m Not There – and comes the screen based on Brian Selznick’s acclaimed book. (Selznick penned by the screenplay; his previous work to be adapted to the screen was Martin Scorsese’s Oscar-winning Hugo.)
Set in two different time periods, Wonderstruck follows two children – Ben and Rose – each of whom are in search of something, he of his father whom he’s never met and she in awe of an actress she holds with great affection. Both kids discover, with clever symmetry, lead down an adventure. Aside from Moore, the ensemble cast includes Michelle Williams (who also appeared in I’m Not There), Amy Hargreaves (Homeland), Oakes Fegley (Pete’s Dragon) and newcomer Millicent Simmonds.
Haynes’ previous film was the highly acclaimed period romance Carol, which starred Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. That film – which premiered at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival and earned a Best Actress prize at the festival for Mara – earned six Oscar nominations, including a pair for its leading ladies. Haynes re-teams with much of the production team he has for films past with Wonderstruck, including cinematographer Edward Lachman, costume designer Sandy Powell, editor Affonso Gonçalves, composer Carter Burwell and producer Christine Vachon.
Wonderstruck will hit theaters, courtesy of Amazon Studios and Roadside Attractions, on October 20th.
