Where Suicide Squad was once a fun after-project for DC to add to their upcoming shared universe, now it’s their biggest hope that the DCEU can still thrive. With the mixed critic vs. fan battle surrounding Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, this film needs to prove itself as a solid movie in its own right, as well as a means of jumpstarting a more well received introduction into DC’s universe. And from what we’ve seen in the trailers and marketing campaign, this film looks like a whole lot of fun, centered around a slew of iconic DC villains being force to do government jobs for Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) as the Suicide Squad. While this has done a lot to calm fans down, the trailers released today at Comic Con have cranked up the anticipation, with both Wonder Woman and Justice League promoting kickass trailers that show DC is listening to its fans. Adding onto this is yet another Suicide Squad trailer, this time with some soundtrack promotion.
This is probably the longest trailer that we have seen from Suicide Squad since its announcement, and while there are a number of action sequences/character interactions in there that we have seen before, it doesn’t change the tone of this movie one bit. Giving a bit more plot concerning Waller’s need for a task force of metahumans, the trailer is loaded with a collection of songs from the movie soundtrack, which really help to build its overall atmosphere. It’s insane in every sense of the word, with its colorful and psychotic cast of villains/antiheroes being the core focus of the upcoming film. Sure there’s a mission that they have to do for the government, and both Joker and Batman will appear along the way, but here it’s all about the characters and how they will bounce off one another throughout the entire thing. Provided they don’t kill each other by the end, of course.
DC might have debuted some awesome looking trailers today, but they need a win to show that they mean business in playing keep-up with Marvel. Hopefully when Suicide Squad opens in theater within the next few weeks, it will be their win.
