The Disney classic Mary Poppins has been approved for a sequel and is scheduled to come out Christmas 2018. The original Mary Poppins came out in 1964 as an a cinematic adaptation of P.L. Travers’s 1934 book. The well awarded Disney film is in the process of getting a sequel with a new cast. The new film will be titled Mary Poppins Returns.
The role of Mary Poppins will be filled by Emily Blunt, who has recently gained fame from such blockbuster films as Sicario and Edge of Tomorrow. Blunt’s Mary will help the Banks family once again with the help of her friend Jack the Lamp Lighter, to be played by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Miranda has the most to bring to the table in his role after his recent success with Pulitzer Prize winning blockbuster musical Hamilton. Blunt recently appeared in Disney’s musical adaptation Into the Woods, so with both stars having musical experience and years of acting, you can expect Blunt and Miranda to make this a worthy successor to a beloved story.
Oscar nominated director Rob Marshall will lead the charge on Mary Poppins Returns. The film will, like its original, be a musical with Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman penning original songs. We shall stay tuned on further developments on Mary Poppins Returns. The movie will head to theaters on December 25, 2018.
