Thrice-Oscar nominated actress Michelle Williams (Oz the Great and Powerful) is in talks to join the cast of Wonderstruck, to be directed by Todd Haynes (Carol). Academy Award winning actress Julianne Moore (Still Alice) is already on board.
Brian Selznick is adapting his own novel of the same name for the big screen. The story follows two children, Ben and Rose, whose independent stories set 50 years apart weave back and forth and ultimately intertwine. Ben in the Midwest longs for the father he has never known. Rose in New York dreams of a mysterious actress whose life she chronicles in a scrapbook. When they each discover tantalizing clues to their mysteries, both children set out on quests to find what they are missing. Williams will play the role of Ben’s mother.
Christine Vachon’s Killer Films, which teamed last year with Haynes on Carol – nominated for 6 Oscars – is producing along with Pam Koffler and John Sloss. Brian Bell is executive producer. Amazon Studios will finance, produce and distribute the movie.
Williams will soon be seen opposite Casey Affleck (The Finest Hours) in Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester by the Sea, a breakout hit at Sundance earlier this year and was also acquired by Amazon Studios. She is also set to appear in Kelly Reichardt’s ensemble film Certain Women. Williams is currently starring on Broadway opposite Jeff Daniels (Allegiant) in the critically acclaimed play Blackbird.
No release date has yet been set for Wonderstruck.
