In a clever post-Super Bowl 50 spot, Warner Bros. partnered with Turkish Arlines to produce competing ads for the eagerly anticipated new DC Comics feature Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Just as the Caped Crusader (played by franchise newcomer Ben Affleck) is about to go head to head with Man of Steel (a returning Henry Cavill), their hometowns (Gotham City and Metropolis) are competing for your tourism.
Gotham City boasts the kind of opulence and culture that can only be provided by the city’s most affluent citizen (that would be Bruce Wayne, but of course) while Metropolis is very much a city on the rebuild considering the pounding it took in the 2013 film Man of Steel. Points to the WB marketing team for cleverly coming up with a different way to sell one of cinema’s most prolific genres… particularly coming off of Deadpool‘s recently released and widely imaginative viral campaign on the importance of checking for testicular cancer.
Batman v. Superman: Dawn for Justice is an important film for WB and DC as they try to lay a cinematic foundation that can hopefully equal the one over at Marvel. Man of Steel‘s Zack Snyder returns to direct featuring an esteemed ensemble cast that includes Affleck, Cavill, Gal Gadot (as Wonder Woman), Jason Momoa (as Aquaman), Jesse Eisenberg (as Lex Luthor), Jeremy Iron (as Alfred), Laurence Fishburne (as Perry White), Diane Lane (as Martha Kent) and Amy Adams (as Lois Lane).
We will find out soon enough if Batman v Superman passes muster; the film will open on March 25th.
