The first trailer for Melissa McCarthy‘s comedy The Boss has surfaced, and it shows McCarthy channeling her inner Donald Trump.
McCarthy’s Michelle Darnell is the wealthiest woman in the US, and doesn’t hesitate to let everyone know it. Channeling some of ‘The Donald’s’ braggadocio and swagger, she holds sway over her empire, until she is sent to prison for insider trading. Getting her comeuppance after losing her fortune, she’s relegated to sleeping on the fold-out sofa of a former employee, Claire (Kristen Bell, of Veronica Mars fame). Fate takes a hand when Darnell accompanies Claire’s daughter to a scout meeting and discovers a way to rebrand herself as America’s sweetheart. Redemption, however, is not as easy as she had hoped, with past adversaries doing their best to derail her efforts at a second chance.
McCarthy created the Darnell character during her years with the comedy troupe The Groundlings. She co-wrote the script with husband Ben Falcone and friend Steve Mallory. Falcone, who directed his wife in the comedy Tammy, is helming a cast of notables including Peter Dinklage (TV’s Game of Thrones), Kristen Schaal, Kathy Bates (American Horror Story) and Cecily Strong.
McCarthy has been busy of late, what with a lead role in the highly anticipated female Ghostbusters reboot scheduled for a July 2016 release.
The Boss hits theaters on April 8, 2016. Check out the trailer below.
