The Dustin Lance Black (Milk) young adult adaptation The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight has finally found its leading man in Robert Sheehan (TV’s Misfits). The film’s main star, Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit), had already been cast last October. With the second lead locked in and the film being shopped to distributors at Cannes this week, it finally seems to have a leg up in development.
Based on the novel by Jennifer E. Smith and a script by Black, the story follows a high school senior about to board a plane to London, where she is expected to attend the wedding ceremony for her father’s second marriage, to her dismay. Fate steps in when she misses her first flight and subsequently meets a charming British boy who changes the course of her journey.
Although Sheehan first made a name for himself on the UK television series Misfits, the actor is most likely known in the US for his role in the 2013 YA adaptation The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones opposite Lily Collins. Since then, he has starred in the Dublin-based television series Love/Hate and will soon appear in the indies The Road Within with Zoe Kravitz (Divergent) and the SXSW hit Moonwalkers with Rupert Grint (the Harry Potter series).
Depending on the success that Statistical Probability has in finding Cannes distributors, Sheehan’s appearance in a YA romance could help him gain further recognition and bolster his acting career—especially since he will be starring alongside a promising up-and-comer like Steinfeld, whose next two films, Barely Lethal and Pitch Perfect 2, will both be released within a month’s time.
