Maika Monroe, star of the indie darling horror flick It Follows, has landed a starring role in Roland Emmerich‘s upcoming Independence Day 2. Director Emmerich has stocked the sequel to his 1996 original with a mix of old and new faces.
Monroe will reportedly play the daughter of the President of the United States (Bill Pullman, reprising his turn from the first film). Vivica A. Fox, Jeff Goldblum, and Judd Hirsch will also revisit their roles from the original blockbuster. Among the new faces in the sequel is Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games), who is reported to be the love interest for Monroe’s character. Charlotte Gainsbourg (Nymphomaniac) and Jessie Usher (When the Game Stands Tall) have also signed on. The film is slated for a June 24, 2016 release.
Original plans called for a second sequel, to be released in 2017, but that has been put on hold. Writer-producer Dean Devlin and Emmerich decided to table ID 3 until they get a measure of moviegoers’ interest after the 20 year break.
