Even though Marvel fans will get to see both Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man this summer, many are already looking forward to next year when a huge comic arc will be introduced in the third Captain America movie, Captain America: Civil War. Casting news has been revealed from the Russo brothers themselves and it involve a host of our favorites returning.
Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers/Captain America and Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark/Iron Man are returning, as well as Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson/Falcon and Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier. But it has now also been confirmed that fan favorite Black Widow, played by Scarlett Johansson, will be returning to fight alongside Captain America as she did in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. For those new to the Marvel world, Civil War is a comic book arc involving the registration act of superheroes’ secret identities, with Captain America calling for the right to privacy and Tony Stark calling for everyone to be registered.
With all of the news released over the past few weeks, fans are also expecting that Black Panther, played by Chadwick Boseman – who will be receiving his own movie during the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 3 – may be making an appearance earlier than the expected appearance in Civil War, possibly as a small role in Age of Ultron. Another returning player from Captain America: The Winter Soldier is Frank Grillo, who played Brock Rumlow, a HYDRA agent, and who will soon take on his alter-ego as Crossbones. It is also rumored that Hawkeye and agent Peggy Carter may be making their own appearances in the third Captain America film, but these rumors have yet to be confirmed.
There is even a hint that Marvel might finally be getting Spider-Man to finally come to the Marvel Cinematic Universe rather than being relegated by contracts to Sony’s movie series, though since the Sony hack, this has yet to be confirmed or denied (read about it here).
Captain America: Civil War is set for release on May 6, 2016, with filming starting this April. By then, hopefully, we’ll have put these rumors to bed and will know exactly who will be appearing in the first movie of the MCU’s Phase 3.
