Charli XCX is collaborating with Martin Scorsese yet again although this time in a less subtle way; the British hyperpop singer and actress has been casted in the filmmaker’s upcoming Gothic psychological horror, What Happens At Night. Charli’s part is still being kept under wraps, with it being reported as a “cameo”.
The film, adapted from Peter Cameron’s 2020 novel of the same title, follows an American married couple as they travel to a small European town during a snowstorm to adopt a baby. There, as they struggle more and more to connect with their baby, they seem to know less and less about their own selves. Jennifer Lawerence and Leonardo DiCaprio will portray the couple, dubbed The Woman and The Man respectively, with supporting performances from Mads Mikkelsen, Patricia Clarkson, and Jared Harris. The film is a production collaboration between Apple Studios and StudioCanal.
This isn’t the only confirmation of a collaboration between Charli and Scorsese we have gotten this year as the cover for her new album Music, Fashion, Film is a black and white photo of the iconic filmmaker standing in a kitchen alongside two other cultural icons, musician John Cale and fashion designer Marc Jacobs. The British pop singer also has had a big year for her film career, starting off the year strong with Aidan Zamiri’s mockumentary The Moment playing off an original idea by Charli in which she plays a fictionalized version of herself. She also had supporting roles in Gregg Araki’s I Want Your Sex and Daniel Goldhaber’s remake of Faces of Death, and an upcoming role in the dark comedy The Gallerist starring Natalie Portman and Jeena Ortega.
Filming took place in the Czech Republic and Switzerland in early this year and was said to have wrapped in late May.
