Lucasfilm and Walt Disney Studios unveiled the first official look at Star Wars: Starfighter during the D23 Entertainment Showcase at the Honda Center, offering attendees an exclusive preview of the upcoming space-adventure feature.
Director Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine) and lead actor Ryan Gosling appeared on stage to introduce the project, which takes place five years after the events of 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Written by Jonathan Tropper (The Adam Project), the narrative operates as a standalone story exploring an uncharted timeline within the Star Wars universe.
Gosling stars as Kade Auberon, whom the actor described to the audience as a cynical rogue from the outer reaches of the galaxy whose path intersects with the fastest starfighter ever constructed. The exclusive teaser screened for attendees featured newcomer Flynn Gray uncovering a tarp-draped spacecraft inside a hangar. Gosling’s character discovers the young boy and scolds him, identifying the vehicle as a decommissioned G-17 Imperial starship. The preview then cut to high-speed action sequences showing craft racing across water terrains alongside planetary chases and space battles.
The ensemble cast features an array of supporting talent, including Amy Adams, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, and Daniel Ings. Produced by Levy under his 21 Laps Entertainment banner alongside Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, principal photography on the feature commenced in the United Kingdom in August 2025 before wrapping later that winter.
Star Wars: Starfighter is scheduled for a wide theatrical release on May 28, 2027. The production marks the first of two scheduled collaborations between Gosling and Levy, with the duo also developing Marvel Studios’ upcoming Ghost Rider feature film, set for release in 2028.
