Spider-Man Brand New Day has shown that it’s becoming harder and harder to deny that the web crawler is the crown jewel of Marvel and Sony. Scoring a whopping 355 million domestically for its opening weekend, Spider-Man is king of the box office again. If it is able to keep up the momentum and cross the billion dollar mark, it could catapult into conversation to dethroning Avengers End Game as the highest grossing superhero film to date, already placing 2nd all time behind Endgame in its overall opening weekend haul.
While Spider-Man may have taken the crown, theater films vying for the top 10 when you slouches either. In its third week, the Odyssey came in second with 51 million. Trailing massively far behind two current box office juggernauts, but far from a flop in its own right is Toy Story 5, which in its 7th week brought 6.3 million and a third place finish. The film currently sits at a domestic total of 462 million.
Minions & Monsters came in fourth with 5.8 million in its fifth week, while Moana trailed behind with 5.3 million taking fifth place in its fourth week. After that Hadestown The Musical took home 2 million for a second weekend outing and a sixth place finish.
After that The Invite came in seventh place with 1.2 million in it’s sixth week as an indie darling hit from A24. 8th Place went to I Want Your Sex, a newcomer which for a limited release only netted 600,000 for its opening weekend. Ninth place went to Evil Dead Burn in its fourth week with 527,000, while tenth went to fellow indie studio offering Young Washington from Angel Studios with 478,000.
