mxdwn was able to attend the Onslaught panel at San Diego Comic-Con. When asked about the cast and director’s opinion on A24 using AI storyboard, director Adam Wingard shut down the question as he did not elaborate further nor did the actors on the panel added any comments.
The panel included Wingard, Adria Arjona, Dan Steven, Rebecca Hall and Drew Starkey. The panelists remained quiet as Wingard established his opinion on A24 replacing hands-on human art with AI storyboards.
Arjona praised Wingard for his creativity in terms of exploring an idea for a character or plot line suggested by the actors. The questions continued after Wingard’s “next question” statement.
Wingard also expressed how his experience in his craft is through human experience from how Onslaught is based on his experience as a parent to his three year old daughter. He implemented the storyline from how a parent needs to be protective of their child. He also brings in the idea of the deadbeat dad trope and how it is often not used for mothers in film.
According to Variety, Google paid $75 million dollars to A24 to use AI Filmmaking strategies, which include storyboarding. Even details from the character’s appearance was highlighted in the panel to show Wingard’s support of human art and creativity.
Onslaught premieres September 4, 2026 in theaters.
