Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of The Odyssey is smashing expectations at the box office. Between its first Thursday preview screenings and Friday, the film has made $51.2 million domestically, and is eyeing an opening as high as $120 million. Worldwide, the film is eyeing a $257.8 million opening. This opening would make the film one of the highest openers for a 2026 release, behind Toy Story 5‘s $151 million domestic opening and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s $131 million domestic opening. In addition, this opening would be the highest for an R-rated feature.
Much of the film’s box office stems from IMAX theaters, both standard and IMAX 70mm. With the film being the first to be shot entirely in the IMAX 70mm format, this format is advertised as the preferred way to see the movie. It is said that over $30 million of the film’s domestic box office comes from IMAX showings, which is over 25% of the film’s domestic total.
The film has also been shown to be a tremendous success critically from critics and audiences. Critics have given the film rave reviews, with a 95% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. Audience-wise, the film has an even higher 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and an A Cinemascore.
The Odyssey is now playing in all standard, large format, IMAX, and IMAX 70mm theaters.
