The first reactions to the highly anticipated Supergirl are starting to trickle in on social media, and it seems like the sophomore entry to James Gunn’s DC universe has not disappointed. The feature, which will be the second film released in DC Studios’ “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters” phase, has gotten more praise than criticism in these first reviews. With people praising the performance of Milly Alcock’s Supergirl and Jason Momoa’s Lobo. Fans and critics compared the film to that of Mad Max with a “surprisingly emotional story.” Check out some of the reviews below.
#Supergirl isn’t a classic but it’s pacey fun and hits most of the targets it aims for. Milly Alcock is great as the titular heroine and Momoa’s Lobo is a blast. Other big wins are the action, humor and when it leans into physical production. Production and costuming design are👍- Simon Thompson, @ShowbizSimon
Supergirl is the superhero movie I’ve missed: a straightforward, poignant story with lots of emotion, especially when we see Kara through little Ruthye’s eyes. Luckily that’s every action scene. Milly Alcock absolutely owns the role and will change our idea of Supergirl forever. – David Crow, @DCrowsNest
#Supergirl is highly enjoyable. It doesn’t quite have the resonance of Superman, but it acts as both a perfect companion and follow-up to that movie with better characters and more complex relationships. It’s also incredibly emotional, which makes the action hit even harder. – Germain Lussier, @GermainLussier
#Supergirl channels the energy of Gunn’s SUPERMAN while carving out its own identity. Surprisingly dark themes, MAD MAX vibes, and a JOHN WICK-style motivation drive the story. Milly Alcock shines, and Jason Momoa brings his trademark chaotic charm. – Peter Gray, @ratedPDG
SUPERGIRL is not at all what I was expecting. I, too, assumed “superhero space movie with needle drops” would have a similar tone to GOTG or even Superman. Instead, it looks and plays more like a Mad Max movie, with dirty worlds, gross villains and a self-destructive hero. – Mike Ryan, @mikeryan
#Supergirl is the best blockbuster of the summer! Terrific action but what sells it is the heart and the characters. Milly Alcock is a force to be reckoned with! Eve Ridley is also incredible & Jason Momoa is pitch perfect as Lobo. One of the best DC films! – Geeks of Color, @GeeksOfColor
SUPERGIRL is everything I wanted it to be. Girls can be messy and that rules! Kara isn’t her cousin and I really loved how this movie makes that clear. She’s a different kind of hero and perfect in every way. – Rachel Leishman, Collider
Milly Alcock is a Kryptonian powerhouse and the perfect Kara Zor-El. The film has a strong heart, giving an interesting and complex character journey for Kara. Jason Momoa is clearly born to play Lobo, and the DCU is only better with those two now in it. Russ Milheim, @RussMilheim
Supergirl will center around Kara Zor-El, Kal-El’s (David Corenswet) older cousin, who survived the destruction of her planet, Krypton, but she lost her parents, Zor-El and Alura (David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham), during the destruction. We soon find that Kara is nothing like her cousin, as she would much rather drink the day away than fight to save it. Her closest companion is her super-dog Krypto, but soon Kara finds him in jeopardy as she gets involved in a vengeance quest led by Eve Ridley’s Ruthye, who is seeking revenge on Matthias Schoenaerts’ Krem of the Yellow Hills. The film was directed by Craig Gillespie and was written by Ana Nogueria, who is set to write the scripts for both DC Studios’ Wonder Woman and Teen Titans.
Be sure to fly into theaters on June 26th to see Supergirl!
