Debuting at Disney’s CinemaCon panel on Thursday was the trailer for Ridley Scott’s upcoming film, The Dog Stars. The film will star Jacob Elordi, fresh off his Academy Award nomination for Frankenstein. Joining Elordi in this star-studded cast are Margaret Qualley, Josh Brolin, Guy Pearce, Allison Janney, and Benedict Wong.
The trailer opens with Hig (Elordi) bringing home a dog to his wife, sharing moments of happiness that quickly disappear. Hig quickly finds himself in a post-apocalyptic world with only his dog, signaling about when everything went wrong. “I was kissing my wife, and playing with my dog, wondering every day why I got so lucky.” It is at this time that he appears to be speaking to Cima (Qualley), before eventually interacting with Bangley (Brolin). Cig and company have carved out their own quiet camp, removed from anything resembling the world as it used to be. After receiving a mysterious radio transmission, Cig sets out to try and reconnect with some semblance of the past, meeting resistance from Bangley. The trailer sees a bond blossoming between Cig and Cima, with Cima sharing her fear of worrying that Cig will leave one day and never make it back home. The trailer concludes with Cig and Cima escaping in a small plane from what appears to be some type of tribe, attacking with old-school weaponry on horseback.
The script for the film was penned by Mark L. Smith. Ridley Scott not only directed, but also produced the film alongside Michael Pruss and Cliff Roberts. Originally set to star in the leading role was Paul Mescal, but he dropped out so that he could star as Paul McCartney in the upcoming Beatles biopics. The film is based on the acclaimed novel by author Peter Heller.
The Dog Stars is set to hit theaters on August 28. The full trailer can be viewed below.
