The holiday season is in full swing, and with that comes the yearly resurgence of the Christmas movie. Illumination’s 2018 animated children’s film simply titled Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch, is finding success on streaming. Despite its middling reaction upon release, in which it was met with 60% critic’s score and 54% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences are gladly returning to Whoville for more merry mischief.
The film is animated in Illumination’s signature style popularized in projects such as the Secret Life of Pets and Minions franchises. 2018’s Grinch has Benedict Cumberbatch voice the titular character and is narrated by musician Pharrell Williams.
The Grinch serves more as an independent iteration of the source material, Suess’ 1957 children’s book, rather than a remake of the 1966 animated film or Universal’s 2000 live-action movie starring Jim Carrey. In this version, The Grinch isn’t an outcast amongst the Who’s, though he’s still not engulfed in the Christmas spirit as the rest of them are. The movie also focuses on a unique take on Cindy Lou Who’s character, but Mr. Grinch does stay true to his plan to steal the holiday. The film is a more streamlined kid-oriented adaptation than the other films, which is likely the driving force behind it playing in so many family homes this holiday season.
Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch is streaming now on Peacock.
