Rumors surrounding British actor Damson Idris continue to circle him as he is allegedly in talks to be casted as T’Challa in the confirmed Black Panther 3. With the passing of the original Black Panther star, Chadwick Boseman in 2020, Idiris has become a top contender for playing the marvel superhero. While Idiris has been promoting his upcoming film F1, Idris went on NBC Today and was asked a question regarding whether he had spoken with Marvel about the role. Idiris answered with a cryptic “yes-no,” which the host interpreted as a potential confirmation. When asked if he would take the role if offered, Idris instantly replied, “Yes.”
The speculation follows earlier insider reports from earlier this year in January suggesting Marvel Studios may be open to changing their decision in recasting T’Challa. After Boseman’s death, Marvel stated the character would not be recast out of respect, staying true to that, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever focused on T’Challa’s younger sister, Shuri, played by Letitia Wright, taking on the crown as well as the Black Panther. However, some fans and insiders believe the studio may revisit that choice in the close future.
Producer Nate Moore has confirmed that Black Panther 3 is in early development, however no official casting development has taken place yet. Director Ryan Coogler is set to return and in bittersweet news, Denzel Washington, who Boseman often looked up to as well as paid for Boseman’s tuition to attend a summer acting program at Oxford University, has been offered a role.
At this moment, Idris’s remarks have added to the growing speculation, however nothing is set into stone. No formal decisions or announcements regarding any T’Challa recasting have been made by Marvel Studios.
