Tom Tykwer, the German director behind films such as Run Lola Run and Cloud Atlas will be debuting his new feature film The Light at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival. The festival is set to run from February 13th to the 23rd. This will mark the first feature film since A Hologram for a King back in 2016.
The Light follows the Engel family, a family that has been slowly growing apart for years. But when a secretive Syrian housekeeper shows up it shakes their whole family dynamic. Suddenly, hidden feelings and grudges rise to the surface and the whole family is forced to confront each other. The film stars Lars Eidinger, Nicolette Krebitz, Michael Ihnow and Max Kruk.
The film will be kicking off the festival, which marks the third time a Tykwer film has opened Belinale. He previously opened the 2002 festival with Heaven and the 2009 festival with The International. Tricia Tuttle, the Berlinale Festival director said, “We knew as soon as we saw Das Licht (The Light) that we wanted to have it open the 75th Berlinale. Tom Tykwer finds beauty and joy in our often fractured and challenging world, and magically captures the essence of our modern life on screen. It is our great pleasure to welcome Tom back to the Berlinale.”
X Verleih and Warner Bros. Germany will be releasing The Light in German theaters on March 20th, 2025. There is currently no set date for any worldwide release.
