Renée Zellweger is returning as the beloved Bridget Jones in Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy. This will be the fourth and final installment of the rom-com series and it is set to premiere on Peacock on February 13.
The film follows Bridget’s journey as a single mother navigating life after the loss of her husband, Mark Darcy (Colin Firth), who passed away during a humanitarian mission in Sudan. Now raising her 9-year-old boy Billy and 4-year-old girl Mabel, Bridget finds herself stuck in emotional conflict.
With encouragement from family including friends Shazzer, Jude, Tom, Miranda, her mother, and her gynecologist Dr. Rawlings (Emma Thompson), Bridget decides it’s time to go down a new path.
As she re-enters the workforce and dives into the world of dating apps, Bridget catches the attention of a charming suitor (Leo Woodall). However, the road to new love isn’t easy. She must juggle her children’s needs, motherly duties, and her son’s hyper-logical science teacher (Chiwetel Ejiofor). It is safe to say that her life is delightfully chaotic.
The movie is based on Helen Fielding’s Bridget Jones book series, specifically the third novel, Mad About the Boy. Directed by Michael Morris, the screenplay is co-written by Fielding, Dan Mazer, and Abi Morgan. Production is led by Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, and Jo Wallett through Working Title Films, with StudioCanal and Miramax co-financing and distributing in select territories.
Fans of the franchise will be thrilled to see familiar faces returning, including Hugh Grant as Daniel Cleaver and Emma Thompson as Dr. Rawlings. The ensemble cast also includes Jim Broadbent, Sarah Solemani, Sally Phillips, Shirley Henderson, James Callis, Neil Pearson, Joanna Scanlan, and Celia Imrie. Newcomers include Leo Woodall, Isla Fisher, Nico Parker, Josette Simon, and Leila Farzad.
The Bridget Jones film series, based on Fielding’s bestselling books, began in 2001 with Bridget Jones’s Diary, directed by Sharon Maguire. The movie became an instant classic, grossing $282 million worldwide on a $25 million budget. It was followed by Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason in 2004 and Bridget Jones’s Baby in 2016. Together, the franchise has grossed over $760 million globally.
Mad About the Boy promises to bring closure to Bridget’s story while staying true to the humor, heart, and chaos that have defined the series. It’s clear Bridget’s legacy as a rom-com icon will live on.
Mark your calendars for February 13 — it’s time to fall in love with Bridget Jones all over again.
