Get ready for holiday romance and laughs as Sweethearts, starring Kiernan Shipka, known for her role in Twisters 2024, and American actor and skateboarder Nico Hiraga from Love In Taipei (2023) hits Max on November 28. This new romantic comedy, directed by Dollface creator Jordan Weiss, follows two college freshmen as they return home for Thanksgiving break with a pact to break up with their high school sweethearts, aiming for a “clean slate.” Naturally, their plans spiral into a coming of age story that college students nationwide may relate to.
Set in New Jersey and filmed in Jersey City, Cranford, and Mahwah’s Ramapo College, Sweethearts captures the heart of a small-town reunion with all the awkwardness of facing old relationships. Shipka and Hiraga’s characters, close friends with undeniable chemistry, plan their so-called during a reunion night before leaving for Thanksgiving. However, between unpredictable encounters and feelings bubbling to the surface, the two discover that breaking up might not be as easy as they thought.
The film features an ensemble cast including Caleb Hearon from Jurassic World Dominion in 2022, Tramell Tillman from Severance (2022), Ava Demary (Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin), Charlie Hall from the 2022 film Single Drunk Female, Joel Kim Booster (Loot), and Christine Taylor (High Desert), promising both humor and heartfelt moments. Produced by Erik Feig and Jessica Switch, with Weiss co-writing alongside Dan Brier, Sweethearts combines wit, romance, and the emotional complexities of young adulthood in this holiday-ready release.
Prepare to laugh, relate, and perhaps reconsider past relationships as Sweethearts debuts on Max this Thanksgiving.
