The Palm Springs International Film Festival has chosen its recipient for the 2024 Vanguard Award. The film in question is Emilia Pérez from writer/director Jacques Audiard.
Emilia Pérez follows a lawyer who has a knack for getting criminals out of prison rather than serving time. Unexpectedly, her services are hired by a crime boss who wants out of the business that he built.
Karla Sofía Gascón leads the film as Emilia. She’s joined by Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, Edgar Ramírez, and Mark Ivanir.
Director Audiard’s résumé has seen him take up both helming and writing several of the projects he’s done. On top of Emilia Pérez, he served as both writer and director on The Sisters Brothers, A Prophet, and Paris, 13th District, among others. He co-wrote this film, in particular with past collaborators Léa Mysius and Thomas Bidegain, as well as Nicolas Livecchi.
Variety pointed out that Emilia Pérez follows in a line of many other acclaimed films that have received the Vanguard Award, which considers the work of an entire crew on a project. Emilia Pérez joins the ranks alongside The Shape Of Water, The Fablemans, Killers Of The Flower Moon, Belfast, and many others.
