Welcome to the Weekly Trailer Roundup, where we count down the top five trailers released in the past week, “top” being defined any way we want to at the moment…exciting, ridiculous, best, worst…
These are the trailers that, for one reason or another, you should be paying attention to.
Another week, more trailers. And like the little man above, we’re smiling for all the movies to get excited for.
#5 – TIE – Runner, Runner Official International Trailer and Crystal Fairy and the Magical Cactus! Official Trailer #1
Both of these trailers were chosen because it’ll be interesting to see how some of the key cast performs. In Runner, Runner, Ben Affleck is asked to play the amoral bad-guy; about the closest he’s come to this in recent memory is The Town, but even then he was the hero. Michael Cera, on the other hand, looks to be putting an interesting twists on his indie, awkward self in the very indie Crystal Fairy. I mean, come on. There’s an exclamation point in the title!
#4 – Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues Official Trailer #1
I’m not actually convinced by the humor in this trailer. But, you know, it’s Anchorman…soooo…
#3 – The Wolf of Wall Street Official Trailer #1
If you watch nothing else this week, watch the final 30 seconds of this trailer. Hilarious. Otherwise, this looks, in a weird way, a lot like Spring Breakers. Both are about the excess and emptiness and criminal nature of American excess.
#2 – Evidence Official Trailer #1
People’s reaction to this trailer is inevitably going to be bound up in how they feel about the horror genre, but the mix of found footage with traditional camera techniques is undeniably compelling.
#1 – The LEGO Movie Official Teaser Trailer #1
The premise, as surmised wholly from the title, sounds pretty stupid, I’ll grant you. Then again, it’s basically a license (so to speak) to do anything you want. Because it’s LEGO. And LEGO actually has a decent history when it come to, for example, cinematics in LEGO video games. Plus, I cannot stress how much I LOVE the aesthetic of this trailer. Yeah, it’s all CG, but the lighting is so good and the animation so reminiscent of actually playing with LEGOs that this has a definite stop-motion feel to it.
