The 51st Saturn Awards, which celebrates excellence in genre entertainment, took place in Burbank, California this weekend. Each year, the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror celebrates the highlights of genre-based entertainment in the past year.
Since awards shows like the Oscars, Emmys, or Golden Globes frequently highlight more traditional genres like drama and comedy, the Saturn Awards aim to recognize alternative forms of storytelling. Actor Joel McHale, a veteran of genre storytelling, hosted the show at the L.A. Marriott Burbank Airport Hotel.
Avatar: The Way of Water, Oppenheimer, Barbie, and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny took home multiple awards in the film division. Outlander and Wednesday won many awards across the Television division.
The Star Trek franchise had a strong showing across the event. In addition to Star Trek: Picard winning four out of its seven Saturn Award nominations, the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation (the precursor to Picard) won a lifetime achievement award presented by the President of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige. The Walking Dead franchise also won a Lifetime Achievement Award. Additionally, actors and creatives Jodie Foster, Keanu Reeves, Seth MacFarlane, and Dave Filoni won various awards honoring their careers.
Star Wars projects did not win as big as Trek this year; it did collect some notable wins for the critically acclaimed Rogue One spin-off Andor (which won Best New Genre Television Series) and their most recent animated series, The Bad Batch. Other notable wins include Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse for Best Animated Film, Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 for Best Superhero Film, and The Last of Us for Best Horror Television Series.
